Crime Prevention
Crime Prevention Presentation by Officer Lee from the Davenport Police Crime Prevention Unit.
Burglary is a crime of opportunity so we need to reduce the opportunities burglars are given:
- Lock all doors—including screen doors
- Use deadbolts
- Ensure the strike plate is 3.5-4” screws—and screw top frame of door
- Use small wooden dowels on the inside of basement windows
- Install tension rods on sliding glass doors
- Close all first floor windows at night
- Remove all valuables from your car
- Record serial numbers (not model numbers) of all electronic devices.
- Take digital photos of all valuables.
- When out of town, leave lights on in a bathroom—will seem as if someone is home—as opposed to the standard living room light.
Landscaping gives the owner AND burglar privacy:
- Trees close to the house are used as ladders
- Trim everything (bushes, etc) 7 feet from ground level.
- Clear the view of the front door
- Place thorny plants in from of basement windows
- Remove mulch around house and replace with small gravel as it makes noise when walked on.
- Have lights on all sides of the house. Motion detectors keep the yard lit and help officers in the event of a foot pursuit.
- Privacy fences provide good hiding for burglars
Safety items in general:
- You can contact Davenport Police to have a Home Security Survey/Assessment of your home done. Call Officer Lee at 326-6173.
- Best defense is to have a dog
- Weapons? Home burglars usually stop in the kitchen first to retrieve a knife. Many time they will have a screwdriver or tool that was used in the break-in.
- Keep pepper spray near your bed.
- Home owners can purchase tasers… remember that any weapon can be taken and used against the homeowner.
- People selling things in the neighborhood should have a license through the city.
- Websites (such as Classmates) seem harmless but offer too much information
- Bring in your mail every day—or have it held if you are leaving town. Stealing credit card info leads to identity theft.
- Davenport has a curfew for juveniles (under 18): 11 pm, Sunday through Thursday, and 1 am for Friday and Saturday
- Alarm systems are affective but note that you need a permit from the City of Davenport for the - Police to follow-up to any alarm signals.
Reporting activity:
- Report ANY activity that seems unusual. Do not assume that anyone else have called. Multiple people calling can given directional information.
- Call 911 to report any suspicious activity or a crime in progress. Using this number ensures that the call is recorded into the system.
- For non-emergency items, call 326-7979. If a dispatcher does not answer (you get a recording) call back until you speak to someone. Note that calls to this number are not registered in the call log.
- You can remain anonymous if you’d like—simply tell the dispatcher. Otherwise there is a chance that a police officer may stop at your house for follow-up information
- Contact a Davenport Police supervisor if you don’t get the response you need.
Garner Farms Neighborhood Watch
With numerous burglaries reported in the association this summer, members have expressed an interest in forming a Neighborhood Watch. This program is a proven crime reduction program. However, like any self-help activity, its success depends on you and your neighbors. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please contact any member of this board.
- Each block in the association would need a block captain.
- Need an overall steering committee
- Need a coordinator to act as the liaison with the Davenport Police Dept.
- Association commitment need to watch out for neighbors and report any suspicious activity
- 4 meetings per year are required
- Davenport Police will send info to the group throughout the year via email
